  • Put Your Best Face Forward for Fall: Skincare Tips for Healthy, Glowing Skin

I know you’ve been feeling it. Dryer hands, face and lips.

The weather is changing big time and your skin is a barometer that says,Dry Face - cracked

    “I’m thirsty!”

What’s a woman or a man to do?! Here are a few tips to get your skin ready for the coming harsh climate of winter.

TIP 1: Use Creamier Facial Cleansers.

Put away the gels and use creamier cleansers that help retain moisture. Be gentle when cleansing. Use a light circular motion. Avoid harsh rubbing and never pull at your skin. Look for sulfate-free and soap free products. Soap-free formulations prevent moisture loss and will leave your skin feeling super soft.

Juara Rice Facial Cleanser is a foaming, sulfate-free, rinse-off cleanser that removes make-up and skin-dulling debris with gentle cleansers.

Men like their products to do more than one thing so they really like Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser with Aloe and Sage Leafdownload (5)

This natural, dual -purpose liquid cleanser and toner gently removes deep-down dirt and oil for clear, hydrated, shave-ready skin. Aloe and Sage Leaf are Certified Organic ingredients.

    Speaking of toners...

TIP 2: Don’t forget the Toner!

Because it’s really important! Toner balances skin’s pH, hydrates skin by binding moisture to your skin, tightens facial pores and increases your moisturizer's absorption. Toners may be used with a cotton ball or sprayed in a mist directly on the face.

All natural Elemental Herbology Flower Harmonizing Mist, for sensitive skin, is made from pure Rose Damask petals collected at dawn when the oil is at its peak. The luxurious facial tonic tones, hydrates, soothes and limits potential reactions to sun, wind, cold, flying and pollution.El Herb flower-harmonising-mist-ref

Jurlique Balancing Mists are toners that come in a variety of natural ingredients to serve your skin type and concerns. The mists contain a wide variety of natural ingredients including marshmallow and glycerin to help prevent moisture loss and intensely hydrate and soften the skin.

Jurlique Mist CitrusThe mists can travel with you and be applied anytime you feel the need for extra moisture.

    TIP 3: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

Use a richer, creamier moisturizer to seal in moisture, ease the signs of aging and repair sun damage, reduce redness and dark spots. Your skin needs richer, more emollient creams (especially at night) that keep the skin elastic and moisturized.

Also, if you notice your skin is dull looking with dark spots, or uneven tone, look for a brightening cream. Brighteners, such as Erno Laszlo Luminous Intensive Cream for daily hydration, prevent discoloration and diminish the appearance of dark spots to even skin tone and illuminate your skin for a fresh, youthful look.download (6)EL Intensive crm

Men will like Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer with SPF 20 and Blue Algae extract to visibly improve skin's overall appearance and hydration. download (7) JBlk moisturBlue Algae extract, a rich source of vitamin E, helps keep skin supple and reduces inflammation and redness.

TIP 4: Exfoliate Gently and Frequently.

Summer environmental aggressors can leave skin dry, dull and flaky. In order to remove the dead skin cells, revive dull skin and repair any damage, you need to exfoliate frequently – probably twice a week with a gentle, natural exfoliator.

AHAVA Facial Mud Exfoliator is a gentle, natural face scrub, formulated with Dead Sea download (6)Mud exfoliatormud to remove dead dulling skin cells while stimulating cellular renewal to reveal brighter, even toned skin.

TIP 5: Mask that Face! Once A Week.

Your skin will thank you.Use a leave-on mask once a week for a more complete and deeper hydrating treatment. You'll get a wide range of skin benefits by giving yourself a facial mask once a week. The mask deeply cleanses, moisturizes, and clarifies. And, can be a very relaxing experience.

Try Juara Avocado Banana Moisture Mask. Avocado strengthens skin's natural barrier while banana helps draw water to the skin to maintain optimal hydration. download (6)banaa mask

If blemishes are a concern, tryJuice Beauty Blemish Clearing Mask with a clarifying blend of exfoliating organic hydroxy-fruit acids, purifying clay and healing bamboo. This weekly mask treatment helps control oil and clears blemished skin for a fresh, radiant complexion.JBty mask

    TIP 6: Ditch the Wax:

Avoid waxy lip balms that keep you licking your lips, which just leads to chapping.

Try Malin+Goetz Lip Moisturizer, a fragrance, flavor and color free lip balm full of absorbent fatty acids.M +G lipUnlike traditional oils and drying waxes and silicones that are often licked off or wiped away, this lip balm nourishes upon impact while offering a continual layer of hydrating protection throughout the day and night.

Hampton Sun Sport Lip Balm has a hydrating formula with an SPF of 30, includes natural and organic ingredients such as pomegranate, aloe vera, grapefruit, cucumber, green tea, and many other calming additives to protect and hydrate lips.

TIP 7: Wear Sunscreen! Wear it every day the sun is out

It’s not the temperature that causes skin damage, premature aging and skin cancer. It’s the UV rays. Avoid the danger, the tell-tale leathery looking skin, deep wrinkles, uneven skin tone and age spots. Apply sunscreen after finishing your makeup. Keep some in your car. Keep some by the front door so you can apply it before you leave the house. No excuses. Wear sunscreen.

HAMPTON SUN’s Smart Serious Sunbathing images (5)offers a complete line of luxury sun protection products in light and silky formulations that combine the most effective moisturizers, anti-oxidants and UVA/UVB sun protection to help reduce premature signs of aging.

  • Drink It In - Hydrating Your Skin

    header-woman-splashing-face

Did you know that "moisturizing" your skin and "hydrating" your skin are two different things? Yep, it's the truth.

We have all seen the ads for cosmetic creams and moisturizers that promise to "penetrate deeply" into the skin, and yet, you apply these creams and two or three hours later, your skin feels dry, tight and stretched again.

The reason for that feeling is this: Hydration is something that occurs within the skin, and while creams and moisturizers may grease it up, lubricate it so to speak, it doesn't really give your skin what it really needs, and that is water.

So, what's a girl to do?

Take, for instance, the Erno Laszlo system of "splashing". When using any of their facial cleansing soaps, they recommend 30 splashes. 20 splashes of "treatment water" (water that has had the soap itself dipped in it) and then 10 splashes of clean water. This may seem excessive and time consuming, however, it allows the minerals in the product to be delivered to the skin with water, which is the best delivery method.

One of my very favorite products, and one that is under utilized, is a spritz toner.

These spritzes can be used all day long to impart healing organic juices, aloe, calendula and water to the skin for instant hydration! Carry them in your purse and liberally spritz during the day for a refresher and let your skin drink it in!

Juice Beauty Mist Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist

When using as a toner in the morning, spritz on, leaving the skin slightly damp and follow with a moisturizing cream that is loaded with Vitamin E, Evening Primrose Oil, and powerful antioxidants that fight free radical production in the skin and mimic our natural acid mantle, which our body loses the ability to produce on its' own as we age. Voila! now you're hydrated!

Two Moisturizers that I highly recommend for all of the reasons listed above are Juice Beauty's Stem Cellular Repair Moisturizer and Elemental Herbology's Cell Plumping Facial Hydrator. Both of these moisturizers are chock full of the good stuff. Antioxidants, Organic juices, Aloe, Argan Oil and Royal Jelly.

    kneipp

I would also be remiss if I didn't mention the Kneipp line of bath products and essential oils for the body. The skin on our bodies is just as important as the skin on our face as far as hydration is concerned. Interesting story: The Kneipp line of products was developed by a German Monk by the name of Sebastian Kneipp who in 1890 cured himself of tuberculosis with homeopathic herbal remedies and water therapy!

The word "essential" means something that has to come from an outside source, not made by the body, and in the case of keeping the skin moist and hydrated, essential fatty acids must be stepped up on a daily basis orally – to help bring back elasticity and thickness to the skin. Evening Primrose Oil is and excellent source of EFA's!

drinking-waterOne last tip... and it's a big one. Make sure that you are drinking the maximum amount of water that you can during the day! There is nothing better for your skin and for your health!

  • I Scream, You scream, We all scream for Sunscreen!

When I first decided to write this blog, I didn't realize that to fully understand how and why we need to protect our skin would require a biology and chemistry course! If you care to look it up, there are a plethora of articles written by dermatologists and scientists that will break down each and every aspect of which atoms are affected, light energy movement within the cells, etc..... SO, I decided to break this down to , well, easy to understand terms. Translation:

UV light (ultraviolet light) from the sun contains both UVA and UVB rays.

UV(A) rays are responsible for AGING the skin.

UV(B) rays are the cancer causing rays. Think Basal Cell Carcinoma.sun

How do we protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun? There are several ways to avoid sun damage. Obviously, staying out of the sun and/or wearing sensible protective clothing are two ways. But really, who wants to do that? Summertime is FUN time! For those of us who want to enjoy the benefits of the sun, there are products that can afford some protection. It is important to understand that no product will give you 100 percent protection from UV light from the sun.

hampton-suncare Hampton Sun Sunscreens. Smart. Serious. Sunbathing.

Hampton Sun and Ahava sunscreens utilize agents such as Avobenzone, Oxybenzone and Octocrylene as their active ingredients. These are chemical agents which absorb the rays of the sun (both kinds). Many people are allergic to certain ingredients and should always check labels. Our Elemental Herbology line has products which contain Methoxycinnamate, which is an organic sunscreen. (Click the picture to take you to our full selection of these products.)

Ahava-Sun-Protection-Anti-Aging-Facial-Moisturizer-SPF-50-697045001699And one thing you definitely don't want to forget is your lips! There is nothing worse than dry, cracked, sore lips. Some people with sun sensitivity are also prone to cold sores from sun exposure.

  • That Bridal Glow

wedding-dress-by-jenny-yoo-spring-2013-bridal-arianna-detail_largeThe Make-up trend for Spring Brides 2013 seems to be leaning toward a soft, natural, sleek and simplistic look. Not only in make-up but in the overall theme of the bride in general.

How many bridal magazines have you gazed at and thought to yourself, I want to look just like THAT on my wedding day!

The thing is, no matter how much make-up you do or don't wear on your special day, it won't mean much if your canvas is not picture perfect. And by canvas, I mean YOUR SKIN.

In an article that appeared in Australian Vogue in January 2013:

Maya Bilalis, who owns a Medispa in Sydney’s Woollahra, has seen her share of bridal beauty meltdowns and believes it’s best to embark on a dermal overhaul well before your wedding.

“Depending on the condition your skin is in, I recommend creating a skin regimen three to six months before your actual wedding day: it won’t work to start a week before.”

#2 on Maya's list of 8 Steps to Glowing, Aisle Ready Skin says:

    2. Think big picture
“Think about the skin all over your body, not just your face. What kind of dress are you wearing on the day? If it’s backless, you may need to give your back a facial or your legs may need exfoliation and preparation if changing into a cocktail dress.”

Ahava Softening Butter Salt Scrub and Ahava Mineral Body Lotion helps to soften, exfoliate, moisturize and restore a beautiful natural glow to the skin with minerals from The Dead Sea.

#6 on her list talks about your skincare routine:

    6. Amp up your skincare
“Use products that contain skin-renewing AHAs/DHAs and antioxidants that fight free radicals to protect your skin. The most skin-effective vitamins for perfect skin are vitamin A/C/E."

cell-food-productluminous_c10_night_treatment Elemental Herbology's Cell Food is an intensive, powerhouse dose of antioxidants and reparative nutrients helps stimulate collagen and elastin production to restore vitality and radiance and reduces the effects of aging such as dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

Erno Laszlo's Luminous C10 Night Treatment works while you sleep. The skin recovers its natural balance in order to recharge its youthful brightness. Speed up the process with this illuminating night moisturizer. With 10% Vitamin C, the highest allowable dose, it works overnight to repair discoloration and environmental damage and stimulate collagen production for brighter, younger looking skin.

And don't forget those last minute glamorous finishing touches!

absolute_finish_foundation_spf_15_6 Tryst Dusting Silk  Get full, flawless skin coverage with a protective barrier. This air whipped mousse make up delivers a natural looking finish, plus antioxidant and broad-spectrum UV protection.

Erno Laszlo Absolute Finish Foundation is absolutely amazing! You get that "porcelain finish", although I definately recommend using a foundation brush with this one.

And lastly, the Diamond Dusting Silk in Tryst by Lady Primrose :  A simple twist unlocks the brush and releases the dusting silk into the bristles. Easy to use and travel with, this acrylic handled dusting brush is refillable with your favorite Lady Primrose dusting silk. The dusting silk inside the handle contains finely crushed chamomile and marigold flowers, blended with silk and plant extracts. Along with a delicate fragrance, this powder contains a beautiful shimmer that is sure to turn heads.
